As many people ask themselves waaaat they should do for work of in life in general, waat wants to make finding answers to these questions easier. Waat’s purpose is to offer information about what kinds of professions there are in the world, What people actually do in these professions, and how they like what they do.

FOR high-schoolers and STUDENTS, waat would like to make them to pay attention to two things - to think about the actual daily work they would be doing in a few years (not only about what it would be like to study, that’ll last a while). ALSO, it’s important to think what you would actually enjoy doing. disliking something 8 hours/day sounds insane!

NEW DATA WILL BE ADDED ALL THE TIME, the eventual purpose being covering all possible professions from cleaners to cheese sculptors to politicians. In case you have any questions of feedback about waat, please contact waatmail@gmail.com.

Could you describe your job in short?

I work by myself in my own company as sole trader. I am responsible for all the areas of my work. Agency however helps with marketing and selling my work.

What do you do on average work day?

I usually start working at 9.30am and finish around 6pm. I start by reading my emails and I respond to them right away, if possible. I make coffee, if nobody at our workroom hasn’t made it yet. I get lunch around 12 and get back at 1pm. During the day I work independently with different kinds of illustration and design works. While creating illustrations, I sketch them with pencil, send the drafts to the client, make possible fixes, and create the finished images on computer.

I also do book design and illustration, brochure and brand design and typography and color design. Sometimes I write or edit text for for example children’s picture books. Every now and then I update my portfolio, put pictures in Instagram or write introduction texts about myself. Sometimes individual piece of work might get finished in 2-3 days, however I design and do some projects for a year or two. I work with longer projects in phases of varying length, from one day to several months of intense work.

What do you love about your job?

Working freely, and when for example illustration work starts flowing and turns into playful dabbling. At its best, my job doesn’t feel like working at all.

What are the worst parts of your job?

Too tight deadlines and occasional changes required by the clients, which in my opinion don’t do any good for the picture.

What are the most important skills in your job?

Communication Creativity Innovation Problem solving Responsibility

What are the most important tools/softwares in your job?

Adobe PhotoShop Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator

How do you acquire and develop these skills?

The work itself teaches you. Talking with the colleagues is extremely important. Meeting new people often gives you necessary new perspectives for your own doing.

If your job differed from your initial expectations, what were your expectations and how did your job differ from them?

In my work I have actively gotten involved with things that interest me. During my career I have tried to make the work to match my expectations and dreams.
